UK bank holidays, and how to make them last

How the planner works

Bank holidays and weekends already hand you blocks of time off. The useful trick is spotting the workdays sitting between two of those blocks, because buying those few days joins everything into one long run.

Tell it how many days of leave you actually have and it plans the year around that. It marks every day as a working day or not, finds every block of days off, prices each gap in leave days, and then picks the combination of breaks that buys you the most time away without going over your allowance or double-booking you. What comes out is a plan you could take to your manager.

It picks properly rather than grabbing the best-looking deal first, which matters more than it sounds. The best ratio in most years is a single day next to a lone bank holiday: one day of leave, four days off. Tempting, except that day is often one of the same days the ten-day Christmas run needs, so taking it costs you the bigger break. With three days to spend in 2026, choosing greedily gets you four days off; choosing properly gets you ten.

If it leaves days unspent, that is deliberate. Once the good bridges are taken, the remaining days buy ordinary time off at no advantage, and you may as well spend those wherever you like.

Where the wins actually are

• Christmas and New Year. The best return most years, because three bank holidays cluster inside ten days. It is also the most variable: which weekday Christmas falls on changes everything, and substitute days shift the shape again.
• Easter. The most reliable big block. Good Friday and Easter Monday sit either side of a weekend every year without fail, so four days of leave in the middle always buys a ten-day run. Not the best ratio, but the one you can count on.
• A single day next to a bank holiday. The cheapest trick going. One day of leave beside a Monday or Friday bank holiday turns a three-day weekend into four days off, at a better ratio than any long break.
• May. Two Monday bank holidays, so a four-day week either side of one leave day.

Worth knowing if you work in Scotland: your Christmas break is genuinely better than everyone else's. The 2nd January holiday extends the run, so where England and Wales get ten days for three in 2026, Scotland gets eleven.

Bank holidays are not the same across the UK

This is the bit that catches people out, and it is why the planner asks where you work rather than assuming.

• Scotland gets 2 January and St Andrew's Day, does not get Easter Monday, and takes its summer bank holiday at the start of August rather than the end.
• Northern Ireland gets St Patrick's Day and the Battle of the Boyne on top of the England & Wales list.
• England & Wales have the fewest: eight in a normal year.

Substitute days matter too. When Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls at a weekend, the holiday shifts to the next working day, which quietly changes the whole shape of the Christmas break that year.

Before you book

Two things worth checking. Bank holidays do not have to be paid leave: your employer can count them towards your 5.6 weeks rather than give them on top, so a "free" long weekend may be coming out of your allowance. Our holiday entitlement calculator covers how that works.
